The First Counselling Session: What to Expect

Many people consider counselling for a long time before making contact. One of the most common questions people have is:
What actually happens in the first counselling session?

In most cases, the first session is simply a conversation. It is an opportunity to talk about what has been happening in your life and what has led you to seek support.
There is no expectation that you need to explain everything perfectly or have a clear plan for change. The first session is often about getting to know each other and understanding the situation more clearly.
A counsellor may ask questions about recent experiences, challenges you are facing, and what you hope might improve through counselling. This helps build a clearer picture of what is happening and what may be most helpful moving forward.
For many people, the experience of being listened to without judgement can itself be an important first step.
Counselling is not about analysing or criticising a person’s life. Instead, it aims to create a supportive space where people can reflect, gain perspective, and begin identifying meaningful steps toward change.
