Change Can be difficult, Improve your Chance of
Success in Counselling with Evidence Informed Methods
Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy that is different from treatment as usual in several ways. Counselling treatment as usual (TAU) often refers to the typical mental health care that someone might receive, which may include one-on-one talk therapy, medications, & other forms of treatment. TAU for stress reduction, managing anxiety or incorporating life change would typically include methods such as cognitive therapy & exposure therapy, which aims to help the individual identify & change the thoughts & behaviors that contribute to the anxiety. Although these first & second-wave cognitive therapy methods may be useful for some people there are alternative & more recently researched proven techniques that may have a longer lasting effect and can be tailored to your individual needs.
Counselling at Bright Vista Using
ACT, is a third-wave cognitive-behavioral therapy, which means it moves beyond the traditional "change the thought, change the emotion" model. ACT focuses on helping the people accept difficult thoughts, feelings, & sensations associated with stress, anxiety & feeling of depressed mood rather than trying to change or eliminate them. ACT instead emphasizes on building & broadening your skills using techniques that are psychological flexible, mindful, which incorporate you values & are easy to learn. Working in partnership with your counsellor at Bright Vista to assist you with charting a course to reduce the negative impact of anxiety & stress in your life, work, & relationships. Learn & practice skills to make positive & lasting changes for yourself.
Help Build Successful Change
In summary, TAU for stress, anxiety & feelings of depressed mood, primarily aims to help change thoughts & behaviors that contribute to the problem, which may a some effect short-term. Whereas counselling that utilises ACT takes a different approach that primarily aims to build & broaden psychological flexibility, mindfulness, and values-based living to reduce the negative impact of mental health problems in the people's lives, rather than trying to change the problem itself. Both approaches can be effective in treating mental health problems, the choice of treatment would depend on the person's history successful change in counselling & their ability to develop a successful working relationship with the counsellor.
